Newport Alumni Newsletter The President's Letter- 2010 Greetings, It is hard to believe that it is time again to start planning for our Annual Banquet in August. First of all, the Board of Directors wishes to express our heartfelt thanks to the many alumns for their generous financial support this past year. We were able to meet existing scholarship commitments that were still on the books from the previous 3 years. However, we will need additional contributions in order for us to once again be in a position to offer two (2) each $4,000 scholarships on a sustained basis to worthy NHS graduates. This past year we welcomed two new alums to the Board of Directors. They are Niesa (Rainwater) Chastain and Fern (Dixie) Easley. Niesa has graciously taken over the Treasurer's duties from Vicki (Hocken) Grusing. Vicki has officially resigned from the Alumni Board. We are sorry to see her leave and wish to THANK her for her years of dedicated service. Because of the Pauletta Huffman embezzlement case, several questions regarding internal controls have been raised and your Board of Directors offer the following to assure that another financial mishap will never again occur. They are: 1. All Board members are now bonded. 2. Recipient names ore written on checks before being signed by two Board members. 3. The Secretary and Treasurer do not sign checks. 4. We have an internal audit committee to periodically review the books. 5. An accounting firm has been retained to certify our bookkeeping practices. 6. The executive Board will attend a Non-profit Orginazation Board Training. With the foregoing in place, we are looking ahead to building the Scholarship Fund back to the "pre-Pauletta" era. (For what it is worth, Pauletta has been making monthly court ordered restitution payments to the Association). We would again like to thank Bob and Suzy Beal for sending out a fundraising letter last year, at their own expense. Thanks to their efforts we recieved many donations. Which brings me to the Annual Banquet which will be held the year August 21st at the Shilo Resort. The menu has been posted on the website and we anticipate both an oral ans silent auction this year for those in attendance. There will be four or five reunions joining us this year (including mine!) to celebrate their memorable years at good ol' Newport High. So mark your calendars now and get those reservation confirmed as soon as possible. After all, August in Newport still attracts many tourists and the hotels and motels will be doing a brisk business. It was a trying time for me in my personal life: therefore, I only took one fitness class. However, I enrolled in summer term to bring myself back up to par. I also too a college success "back on course" class that really helped focus on what I need to be focusing on. So now, I am where I should be and I am excited, because I only have three more classes to take before I can apply for the dental hygene program at Lane.
