A note from your Treasurer
I am not what any one would call a Diplomat! I work hard at what I believe to be a good and worthy cause. I do believe that the Scholorships that this Committee sponsors to help graduates with their financing to start College and their life in the working world to be that good and worthy cause.
My piers nominated me for the treasurer position again, a position I take quite seriously and am proud to occupy, but, you don't know how close I came to turning them down. The lack of Donations on the Banquet reservations really upset me, to think the Alumni did not believe in the next generation enough invest in their education to hopefully make life (theirs and ours) better, or maybe it's us they don't trust to give what we spend hours of free time to make work. And after the Auction outcome, the sale (or the lack of sale) of the Hoodies we figured Alumni would buy for keepsakes (specially those that don't come every year or live far away), we spent months trying to get them "just right", no money to speak of in the collection jars. I was so upset, I just could not believe! And then there was the $300 weekends at the Casinos that went for $17. I spent months convincing people that their(it is the casinos') money would be well spent and make us Scholarship money. It makes me wonder if I want to go the extra mile this year or not. Special things are not appreciated!
That is what we DO, collect money for Scholarships---that's ALL we do "Scholarships". The Banquet is for the collection of MONEY! We don't do it because we don't have anything else to do, believe me! This year some of the Class reunions didn't even support us. The reunions sponsored by those that realize what we do were there, donated to the auction and supported us with checks.......We Thank You All! The Banquet takes a lot of work and planning. Acually we started this month (October 2012). We will have a 'LIVE' auction this year August 17, 2013.The Committee trys to make the Banquet interesting and enjoyable. Hopefully we can round up Auction items worth more than $50 which is what most of our businesses contribute in this area. We are looking for a different place to have the Banquet, and maybe not sit down meals. Perhaps less expensive (who knows with everything going up).
Our Board Member Robert Overholser will be a $1,000 sponsor for 2013, Oregon Coast Bank will be a $1,000 sponsor for 2013, the Alumni Association will sponsor $1,000 for 2013, Mr Atkins from Florida: $1,000 for 2013, Mr. Baldwin From Montana: $1,000 for 2013; there are 4,000 plus Alumni that have graduated from here and there are 5 that Donate $500 or more each year, and there are 3 Class Groups that Contribute each year. I think that percentage stinks! I personally know Graduates that the business world has been good to that could Contibute once a year, get their Donor Certificate for Tax deduction and do fine, and they all live in Newport!
We still have Hoodies for sale! We can only order different styles than the Hoodies if we get enough orders to make a miniumum of 72 articals, then we can order anything you like. Money to be collected when we reach that limit. Right now we have Small, Medium and Large for $30 plus $7 mailing or Ex Large, 2Ex Large $35 plus $7. Zippers full or half are available $45 plus $8, or any other configuration. I have 2 ordered from the Banquet. They are medium grey, have a graduated Cub with a Blue gown on the back and the Cubs logo on the front. They really are different and neat!
You all know of course that if we don't receive MONEY, we won't be able to sponsor Scholorships. If we aren't able to give Scholorships we will give what ever money we do have to the 'Boosters'. Disband the Alumni Association and there won't be any more All Class Reunion Banquets.
You have a very good, competant hard working group of officers! Please show us your support for all the time, our money and effort that is put into this Committee.
COME BECOME A BOARD MEMBER! "Now that would really open your eyes!!!!" Believe me we are having many open discussions about everything that comes on the floor.
Just to let everyone know.......we have received $13 toward 2013 scholarships since August 2012.
We have a perminate meeting site that is free, at the Newport PUD meeting room. We post meeting times and the meetings are open. IDEAS ARE ALWAYS WECOME! We meet on Sunday April 14, 2013 at 1:30 PM . JUST COME AND EXPRESS YOUR THOUGHTS!
